What's an actor's most important feature? According to Vivica A. Fox, whose most recent big-screen role was in Independence Day: Resurgence, it's what you see right up front.

"On screen, your smile and your eyes are the most inviting things that bring the audience in" she said. "Especially if you play the hot chick."

But like lots of people, Vivica reached a point where she felt her smile needed a little help in order to look its best. That's when she turned to a popular cosmetic dental treatment.

"I got veneers years ago," Ms. Fox told Dear Doctor magazine in a recent interview, "just because I had some gapping that probably only I noticed."

What exactly are dental veneers? Essentially, they are thin shells of lustrous porcelain that are permanently attached to the front surfaces of the teeth. Tough, lifelike and stain-resistant, they can cover up a number of defects in your smile — including stains, chips, cracks, and even minor spacing irregularities like the ones Vivica had.

Veneers have become the treatment of choice for Hollywood celebs — and lots of regular folks too — for many reasons. Unlike some treatments that can take many months, it takes just a few appointments to have veneers placed on your teeth. Because they are custom made just for you, they allow you to decide how bright you want your smile to be: anywhere from a natural pearly hue to a brilliant "Hollywood white." Best of all, they are easy to maintain, and can last for many years with only routine care.

To place traditional veneers, it's necessary to prepare the tooth by removing a small amount (a millimeter or two) of its enamel surface. This keeps it from feeling too big — but it also means the treatment can't be reversed, so once you get veneers, you'll always have them. In certain situations, "no-prep" or minimal-prep veneers, which require little or no removal of tooth enamel, may be an option for some people.

Veneers aren't the only way to create a better smile: Teeth whitening, crowns or orthodontic work may also be an alternative. But for many, veneers are the preferred option. What does Vivica think of hers?

"I love my veneers!" she declared, noting that they have held up well for over a decade.

Discover the wonderful benefits you’ll enjoy when you get dental veneers.

Are you ready to alter your smile with help from cosmetic dentistry? If so, you may be wondering what porcelain veneers are and what they can do for your appearance. Don’t let cosmetic flaws in your smile affect your appearance. Our Pittsburgh, PA, aesthetic dentist Dr. Gary Machiko can help. Learn more about these popular restorations.

What are dental veneers?

Veneers are very thin shells made from a tooth-colored material such as porcelain or composite resin that is bonded to the front of several Big Smile teeth to alter the appearance of your smile while hiding common imperfections.

What are the benefits of porcelain veneers?

While veneers can be made from either porcelain or composite resin, our Pittsburgh, PA, dentist often uses porcelain because not only is the material very resilient and stain resistant but it also mimics that translucency and appearance of real tooth enamel.

What cosmetic problems can veneers improve?

Since veneers are designed to cover the entire front surface of a tooth you can imagine that it can do everything from changing the length and shape of a tooth to improving its color. Veneers are also great for hiding,

  • Internal stains and discolorations
  • Cosmetic chips and cracks
  • Irregularly shaped teeth
  • Uneven or worn teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Minor crookedness, crowding or misalignments

What goes into getting veneers?

In order to get veneers, you will first need to come in for a consultation where we will examine your teeth and take X-rays to make sure that your teeth are strong and healthy enough to support veneers.

The second step is to prep the teeth for veneers. This involves removing a very small amount of enamel from the front of your teeth. Next, impressions are taken. Temporary veneers may also be placed over your teeth to protect them. During your next appointment, you’ll come back in so that we can remove your temporary veneers and bond your permanent veneers to your teeth. Dental veneers can be made and placed in as little as two visits.

How long do veneers last?

How well you care for your smile will impact the longevity of your veneers. With proper maintenance and care, veneers can last anywhere from 5-10 years.

What is a dental veneer?
A dental veneer is a thin shell of porcelain which affixes to the surface of a tooth. Made individually for each patient, a veneer covers the tooth’s original appearance to give it a new one. The veneer’s design is based on a clay mold of the mouth, taken by your dentist. A dental technician in a dental lab carefully carves the veneer out of a ceramic block before meticulously color-matching the restoration to the natural teeth which will come to surround it.

Are porcelain dental veneers right for me?
A good candidate for veneers wants to improve the appearance of their smile. Dentists often use veneers to correct various issues, including:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Stained teeth
  • Slightly misaligned teeth
  • Slightly gapped teeth

Additionally, candidates should be in good dental health with no signs of tooth decay or gum disease. Patients should also have a strong at-home oral care routine involving brushing at least twice daily, flossing once a day, and regularly attending dental examinations and cleanings. These preventative measures ensure that the teeth remain healthy and clean foundations for veneers.

You may have multiple options for making your smile look more aesthetically pleasing when you visit cosmetic dentist Dr. Gary Machiko. Treatments include dental bonding, teeth whitening, porcelain crowns, and metal or invisible braces. But when you want a complete smile makeover, ask your Pittsburgh, PA, dentist about veneers. The main benefit of getting veneers is that this cosmetic treatment allows your dentist to reshape your smile so that it looks both natural and beautiful.

Why Veneers?
The decision on which cosmetic treatment will be best for you depends on the current condition of your natural teeth. If your teeth are severely damaged, worn out, and stained at the inner layers, concealing them with veneers may be the right choice for a number of reasons. It's a fast, effective cosmetic solution. Also, if you want a nicer smile that will last for many years, veneers can last up to 20 years or longer.

Reshaping Your Smile
An important part of the veneer treatment is shaping and contouring each individual device so that the whole smile looks as natural as possible. Your teeth aren't square or pointy around the edges—they have smooth, rounded corners. Your Pittsburgh, PA, dentist's goal is to rebuild and mimic the natural look of your smile. Your dentist can create a “wax veneer” model or use composite resin material to give you an idea of what complete porcelain veneers will look like on your teeth.

Other Benefits of Veneers
Veneers offer additional benefits besides just a better looking smile that lasts for decades. They also provide some protection for your teeth. Because the devices are covering the outer surface, there is a reduced chance of dental decay and enamel erosion. Veneers also encourage you to commit to better dental care and may inspire you to visit your dentist more often for cleanings and necessary treatments.

A New Smile for You
You can get a whole new smile in a relatively short period of time with veneers. Call (724) 719-2866 today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gary Machiko at his cosmetic dentistry practice in Pittsburgh, PA.

Even minor cosmetic imperfections can take a toll on your smile. From stains and discolorations to gaps between teeth and chips or veneerscracks, your smile may not look the way you want it to, but you are not alone. A smile makeover is at the top of many people's wish list for cosmetic improvements. The good news is that depending on your situation, you don't necessarily have to invest in major dental work to fix and dramatically improve your smile. Dr. Gary Machiko, a dentist in Pittsburgh, PA, recommends dental veneers for a number of common cosmetic dental problems.

Chances are that someone you know has improved their smile with dental veneers. They have become a staple of cosmetic dentistry due to their affordability and effectiveness in correcting a number of cosmetic issues like:

  • Chips and cracks
  • Mild to moderate gaps and spaces not related to bite or alignment problems
  • Change tooth size and shape
  • Cover stains and discolorations
  • Seal a tooth after root canal therapy or treatment for tooth decay

Despite the fact that veneers deliver major results that can quite literally makeover your smile overnight, it is a relatively minimally invasive procedure. Veneers are typically made of razor-thin porcelain or composite material that is bonded directly onto the teeth. Each veneer is custom designed to change the size, shape, or color of a damaged tooth. In some cases, a small layer of enamel may have to be shaved down to ensure that the veneer fits properly and evenly over the tooth and a natural-looking finish. In most cases, a good veneer can last anywhere from five to ten years and beyond, provided you maintain a good oral hygiene routine and make regular visits to the dentist for check-ups and professional cleanings. Whether you need to repair some cosmetic damage or just want to make cosmetic improvements, veneers may be a good option for you.
